The local music group Egoflo consisting of artists Felix Nobody (Marco Pratt), Notepad (Sebastian Abreu), and Mack (Mack Graham), has been gaining local and national attention. The group is part of the independent record label by the same name and was founded in 2012. Felix Nobody and Notepad perform rap and hip-hop for the group, while Mack has more of an indie/folk style.
While these two styles of music are traditionally very different they have been featured together in recent years by more established groups with great success. Egoflo recently performed at the Date Shed on March 15, 2013 and drew a crowd of roughly 100 people. Their set began with a performance by Mack, whose smooth melodies and soothing voice show her potential as a great musician. After performing some original songs, Mack was followed on stage by Felix Nobody and Notepad. The duo began by performing one of their more popular songs, “Channeling.” This energized the crowd and prepared it for their music to come. Both performances were well received and showed that they have the ability to gather a strong following of fans.
Egoflo has also performed at the University of Southern California’s spring music carnival, “Springfest 2012″, where they opened for acts such as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Anberlin, and DJ Wolfgang Gartner.
When asked what music the group draws inspiration from the responses ranged from John Mayer, with Felix Nobody saying, “he’s such a genius, not just musically but even in his interviews, the metaphors that he uses to explain the way he feels show why he is so good at writing songs”, to Indie music but they are always exploring new sounds and genres to expand their “music brain”. Felix Nobody and Notepad are inspired by different artists and genres and these differences are also present when it comes to listening to their own music.
Notepad says, “our music is almost all I listen to” while Felix Nobody says he never listens to their music, “I can’t listen to our music for a minute without picking out everything that I think is wrong with it because I’m such a perfectionist”. The group attributes these differences in inspiration and listening as what allows them to be so productive and work so well together.
Their recent success was not instant and all the members of the band are aware of this. Notepad said, “there’s nothing that you can achieve in this world without hard work, it doesn’t matter how good or gifted you are at it.” Felix Nobody also noted, “after working with Egoflo I’ve learned that to achieve great things you can’t ever do it alone.” The hard work they’ve put into their music is clearly evident and paying off as they perform more shows and larger venues.
Egoflo still remembers the Coachella Valley where they began their career and appreciate the responses they have received from locals. Felix Nobody goes on to say, “people in the desert have shown us a lot of love. I think people have liked us because we’re bringing something different as far as what the Valley has seen before.”
